Rosin filter bags are essential for achieving clean, high-yield solventless extracts. Follow this guide to maximize your results.
What You'll Need:
1. Rosin filter bags (correct micron size for your material)
2. Rosin press machine
3. Your material (flower, hash, kief)
4. Rosin Parchment paper
5. Pre-press mold (optional but recommended)
Step 1: Choose the Right Bag & Micron
1. Flower: Use 90u to 160u bags. A wider micron (e.g., 160u) gives higher yield; a tighter micron (e.g., 90u) gives cleaner extract.
2. Hash / Kief: Use 25u to 90u bags. Tighter microns are necessary to contain the finer material.
3. Bag Size: Match the bag width to your press plate width.
Step 2: Prepare the Bag (Bottletech Style - Recommended)
1. Fill: Place your material into the flat bag. Do not overfill.
2. Fold & Form: Gather the open end and twist it gently to form a compact, cylinder-like "bottle" shape.
The goal is a dense, even pack.
3. Pre-Press (Optional): Use a pre-press mold to form a perfect puck before placing it in the bag.
This improves oil flow.
Step 3: Pressing
1. Warm Up: Preheat your press to the desired temperature (Flower: 180°F-220°F / Hash: 150°F-180°F).
2. Position: Place the filled bag between two sheets of parchment paper on the bottom plate.
3. Press Slowly:
1. Close the plates until they just touch the bag.
2. Apply light pressure for a 15-30 second warm-up (to allow the material to heat through).
3. Gradually increase pressure to full over the next 45-90 seconds. Do not smash too fast!
4. Hold: Maintain full pressure for the remaining time (total press time is typically 1.5 to 3 minutes).
Step 4: Collect & Store
1. Carefully open the plates.
2. Peel the parchment paper away from the bag. Your fresh rosin will be on the parchment.
3. Collect using a dab tool.
4. For best flavor and consistency, cure your rosin in an airtight container (like a glass jar).
Pro Tips for Best Results:
✅ Moisture is Key: Your starting material should have a relative humidity of 58-62% for flower.
✅ Don't Overpack: Filling the bag more than ¾ full can restrict flow and reduce yield.
✅ Low & Slow: Lower temperatures and slower pressure typically yield higher quality, terpene-rich rosin.
✅ Bag Orientation: Place the seam of the bag perpendicular to the plates to prevent bursting.
Troubleshooting:
Low Yield? Check material humidity, temperature, pressure, and micron size.
Bag Blowout? You may have overfilled it, applied pressure too fast, or used a micron size too small for the material.
Rosin Too Dark? Press temperature may be too high.
By following these steps, you'll consistently produce clean, flavorful solventless rosin. Happy pressing!
